What Do I Do When Someone Is Poisoned?
Northern New England Poison Center

What Do I Do When Someone Is Poisoned?

Before you call, remain calm and...

  • If the poison was eaten:
    • Very carefully, remove any pieces still in the mouth.
    • If the person is awake, give him or her a little water to drink.

  • If the poison was breathed in:
    • If it is safe for you to do so, carry the person to a place where there is fresh air.
    • If the person is not breathing normally (or is in any physical distress), call an ambulance.

  • If the poison is on the skin:
    • Brush off any dry poisons.
    • Flush with lots of room-temperature water, then wash with soap and water.

  • If the poison is in the eye:
    • Begin flushing immediately with room-temperature water.
    • Flush the eye for 15 minutes.
    • Pour the water over the bridge of the nose, so that it flows across the open eyes (but is not poured into the eyes).

Try one of our heart-healthy recipes.
